Elfen Lied...
is an excellent anime as far as the first DVD volume goes. Elfen Lied had some surprises for me. I felt the backgrounds were mastefully done and the characters had decent enough backgrounds (having seen only the first four episodes, i am sure more depth is forthcoming); Kohta struck me the most because I have been in his position myself (loss of family and memory).
Lucy/Nyu's constant 'nyu-ing' was a bit grating, but I think the romantic comedy aspect took the edge off all the gore. The gore was there for the shock value of it; also to contrast the innocence of Lucy as Nyu. At first, I understood the nudity to be a requirement - Lucy's manipulation of objects as missiles precluding any clothing - and then to emphasize Lucy/Nyu's innocence. Call it fanservice if you like; I'm sure some would argue it could have been done away with. I'd enjoy it either way.
The music was very good from both opening and closing to the BGM; I am not all that picky as you can see. Overall I enjoyed the first DVD and am looking forward to the rest.
The anime has a beautiful opening song, Lilium. When I was growing up I always disliked Latin because 1) it was a language the church used, and 2) it was supposedly the language of the educated elite. How un-enlightened I was back then, ne?
This song is sung completely in Latin; the lyrics are below (with a translation in English)
Latin
Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam
Et lingua rius loquetur iudicium
Beatus vir qui sufferit tentationem
Quoniam cum probatus fuerit accipiet coronam vitae
Kyrie, Ignis Divine, eleison
O quam sancta, quam serena
Quam benigna, quam amoena
O castitatis lilium
English
The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom
And his tongue shall speak judgement
Blessed is the man who endureth temptation
For when he hath been proved he shall receive a crown of life
Lord, Fire Divine, have mercy
O how holy, how serene
How benign, how pleasant
O lily of purity

The anime that started it all for you...
I ran across this topic on ANN's forum. Here's what I posted...
Good topic for a newby (here) like me! When I was growing up I loved public television because they had shows like
Speed Racer and
Marine Boy, of course I had no idea they were anime. Later in life I would complain because cartoons weren't as good as they were in my day!
Whe I had kids of my own and lived in Japan (on base) I started picking up videos, then switched to DVDs and that's when I picked up alot of
Pokemon and
Sailor Moon. I'd watch with the kids; these were pretty good and enjoyable. I would also actually look forward to catching
Akazukin Chacha on CN international. I had a understanding that these shows were anime, but wasn't quite hooked until I picked up the complete collection of
Martian Successor Nadesico; I couldn't stop watching it. Now that I look back at it, it's so full of anime cliches it's hillarious. I've been hooked ever since.
I share with the kids (to a point); I'll check out most any title I can get my hands on (within budget) and enjoy almost anything (to prove my point,
Hyper Dolls and
Arcade Gamer Fubuki come to mind). I enjoy the angst ridden stuff, but mostly love the comedy. Character developement and artwork far surpass any American works, although they are starting to see the light (i.e.
Teen Titans).
I added all the DVDs I had to the My Anime section here and couldn't believe I have over 300 DVDs! My wife may wring my neck any day now...

Burn Up!
I finished the last (so far) of the Burn Up! series (Burn Up! Scramble). It was a pretty good title in and of itself, being a re-telling yet again of the Burn Up Warrior's story. Three lovely ladies are the members of an elite and secret department of the police force. They are authorized to use extreme methods to deal with the rampant criminal element in an otherwise peaceful global environment.
To compare all the seperate Burn Up! series, this one's plot was rather weak. There were some good portions (Maya's past revealed and the episode when Lilica get's drunk;>), but overall, this one lacked the campy humor set forth in Burn Up! W.
The first (simply named Burn Up!) had a decent story, but being old, it was harder to watch. Burn Up! W was the OVA remake which was much better and created a TV sequel in Burn Up! Excess. The Rio in Scramble, of all the characters, comes the closest to being the same.
All in all a delightful series, full of fanservice and kick ass police women.

Ai, Mai, Mii...
doesn't that sound familiar (if you say it out loud)! Actually they are the names of the three sisters of Popotan. Along with thier "maid" Mea, they travel through time on a journey of discovery, although what they discover is quite eye (or mind) opening!
I finished the last DVD of the three DVD 12 episode series. The last episode had me in tears, but i'm a sucker that way to begin with. Given that the origin of this anime is a hentai game (warning: don't go looking for images; they
are graphic) and the anime itself is full of fanservice, I have to admit, taken by itself the anime was quite good. I almost wish I hadn't heard about the game version. Then again, I am an anime addict, so I want as complete details as I can get on any anime I come across!

Evangelion (pt 2)...
This anime is one of my all time favorites. Check out this
discussion on Anime News Network.
I also posted some dialogue from the original series final episode on my political blog
here for my off kilter friends there! Note: the "cartoon" reference was strictly for the visitors over there (it stems from a previous post!).
